Mortimer Aloisius

I have been calling the baby Mortimer Aloisius for the last few months. Mary loathes the name. (Okay, "loathes the name" is a little strong. Maybe we can settle on "not overly fond of the name".) Now it will have to stop because this morning baby Joshua arrived. He weighed in a 9 pounds 0 ounces and is 21 inches long. He is healthy and showed the doctor how well his plumbing worked immediately after being born. Mary is also doing well. She is recovering in the hospital. She did a great job.

Mary had been having contractions off and on for the last couple of days. Today they seemed to be coming more frequently. But right when she thought everything was starting, the contractions would disappear. Around 7:00 pm, they became more regular. We did not know if we should call the doctor. After we put the children to bed, I told Mary to try to get some sleep. The contractions would not stop. We were undecided if we should go to the hospital, but the doctor thought it would not hurt. So we got ready while a friend came over to baby sit.

At 10:53 PM, we checked into the hospital.
At 11:43 PM, they broke Mary's membranes because she was already at least a 7 but her water had not broken.
At 12:08 AM, Joshua was born.

This is what he looked like not long after arriving. After Mary fed Joshua, she took a couple of pictures.
In between the birth and the feeding, I took this little video with our digital camera.

If the embedded video is not working, you can try this.

Congratulations to all of you! He looks great, and I'm so excited for you guys.

And it's frightening, but seeing those pictures of a brand-new little one makes me want another newborn...seven weeks is just too old. ;-)

Congratulations! I had just on my mission, did not have a blog, had no internet access in the MTC, and so missed the chance to do this on time. Better late than never - CONGRATULATIONS! :)
